What is the NDIS?
The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is a single, national scheme that funds reasonable and necessary support to help people with disability reach goals throughout life. It also supports carers of people with disability.
The NDIS works with people individually and recognises that people have different needs and goals. It gives people choice about the support they need to live the life they want.
If someone has a significant and permanent disability or developmental delay, the NDIS helps them get services and support in their community. It also gives funding for support like early intervention therapies or one-off items like wheelchairs or communication devices.
The NDIS is run by the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA).
What support is available via NDIS funding?
The NDIS funds ‘reasonable and necessary’ supports that help a person living with a disability to reach their goals and increase their social and economic participation. The types of services vary depending on each individual’s needs.
For a support to be deemed ‘reasonable and necessary’ it must:
- Be related to the participant’s disability
- Be likely to be effective and beneficial to the participant
- Take into account informal supports provided by families, carers and the community
Is a plan manager the same as a support coordinator?
No. While they both help participants with managing and implementing their NDIS plan, support coordination is a capacity building support funded to help participants design and implement the supports in their plan so they can live a better life.
As a participant’s confidence and capacity to implement their plan increases, funding for support coordination may decrease.
A Plan Manager’s role is to manage and monitor plan funding and submit claims to the NDIA on behalf of a participant’s providers.
What is not including under NDIS funding?
The NDIS does not fund services such as education, income support, housing, employment, public transport or health services because these types of services are referred to as ‘mainstream services.’ However, the NDIS will support people living with a disability to connect to these types of services.
