What is

Supported Independent Living?
Supported Independent Living (SIL) is a shared accommodation residence that enables people with disability (including mental illness) to live on their own or with family while receiving the type of support that they require on a day to day basis.

Typically, a SIL residence will consist of between 3-5 bedrooms as well as common areas just like a typical household.

It’s important to know that it’s your choice whether or not you move into a SIL residence or not. You’ll want to discover who your new housemates may be before making the decision to move in. If they are compatible with you then you’ll have a higher likelihood of finding a successful residence.

Benefits of Supported Independent Living

There are many benefits of living in a supported independent living (SIL) residence. These include:

Improved Independence

Arguably the most important benefit for choosing to live in a SIL residence is that of improved independence.

The staff who are at the residence will increase your independence by helping you, when required to do so, with tasks such as personal care (e.g. showering and other hygiene tasks), daily skills and chores (e.g. cooking, cleaning), household management and financial budgeting tasks, supporting the development of social interaction and communication, and assisting you with any and all tasks that you require help with overnight.

Staff are there for you when you need and want them to be. They give you the freedom to do the tasks that you are capable of doing when you choose to do them. They are on hand to assist when you request it.

Increased Social Circle

When you live in a supported independent living residence you will likely have an opportunity to increase your social circle. This is because you will be likely to be living in a shared home.

While you get to enjoy the privacy of your own room you will also benefit from sharing communal areas such as a kitchen, laundry, and the yard space.

You may even be able to make friends and acquaintances with other people who you would like to do joint activities with beyond the home. For example, there may be someone who would love to go down to the sports club with you to cheer on the local team!

Many SIL providers, including Bradannii, will help you with added excursions and activities including shopping, markets, sport events, concerts, movies, gardening, craft days, etc. They will support you in maximizing your opportunities to contribute and to be a part of your community!

Access to the Right Supports When Required

From a professional health perspective, there are not many better living situations for people with disability than living in a supported independent living residence. That is because these residences have support staff available to you 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

The support staff who will work with you are highly qualified professionals who have been educated to provide the type of care that you require. In finding the right residence you will discover the type of staff who will work with you for your best results.

Greater Opportunity to Thrive in Other Life Areas

There are many reasons why a SIL residence is right for you and one of them is that you will have a better opportunity to thrive in other areas of your life. For example, a SIL may be closer to where you are currently working or attempting to find work, are closer to the facilities and venues that you attend for social interaction and entertainment.

Higher Level of Safety and Freedom

Given the fact that there is always a support worker on site you will never have to fear being unable to defend yourself should something happen. For example, should an intruder attempt break in to the home you would not be alone.

Having your own space also affords you the types of freedoms that you may not already enjoy where you are currently living. If this is the case, imagine the ability to do what you enjoy doing whenever you want to do it. As long as you are obeying general common laws (e.g. noise control) and basic home rules the world (your space) is your oyster.

What Supports Are Available in a SIL Residence?

As aforementioned, support is generally provided 24-hours a day, 7-days a week. Many residences breakdown the levels of care required. For example, lower, standard, and higher levels of requirement.

It is important to understand that the higher the needs the more likely support will be available 24-hours a day. For example, for high need residents who need on hand support such as overnight care and high-level behavioural issues, a SIL residence will ensure that a support member is available on hand.
